Loveland’s Art in the Park and the last freelance for a while

Well this will probably be my last post for Sunday freelance work for the Reporter-Herald for quite a while.

Starting today was the first day back to Collegian work 5+ days a week. Meaning I will no longer have Sunday free to shoot freelance work.

Kind of a bittersweet thing as I’m excited to start the real work of being the editor of a daily newspaper but probably the end of being able to pay attention to my first love: photography.

But enough of my being sappy and on to some work.

I shot Art in the Park or Sculpture in the Park if you prefer the more formal name. Along with that was the Loveland Invitational Sculpture show and sale. Was a fun shoot and I was asked to provide a slideshow and I also volunteered to help on a video.

The video was kind of a learning experience as neither of us have much background. Hopefully the next one will be a bit better. I really only provided one piece of b-roll and the editing and the rest was done by Madeline Novey.

So here they are(shot for the Loveland Reporter-Herald):

And last of all, the video:

Thanks and please drop me a line on what you think.

Rocketry Photo Story

On Sunday the Tribune printed a photo story I did for them about Northern Colorado Rocketry Club. You can see it on the Tribune’s site here.

Have to say it was a lot of fun to shoot and pretty impressive. I’ll post the little copy block I wrote to go with it below the photos.

Written for the Greeley Tribune:

When Ted Apke found a new hobby, his son Colin Apke, found a career path. From a 7-year-old tagging along with his father to an aerospace engineering degree from the University of Colorado, Colin credits amateur rocketry.

Every month a group of individuals from the Northern Colorado Rocketry Club gathers at one of two locations in Weld County to launch home-built rockets to heights approaching 20,000 feet. These are northern Colorado’s amateur rocketeers.

This group ranges from kids with their first Estes rocket to aerospace engineers, such as Colin, with liquid-fueled rockets taller than the average person. For many it’s a family affair, but for others it’s about building bigger and more powerful.

Each year the club hosts a series of competitions ranging from height contests to something known as the ABC competition, which requires rocketeers to ascend in motor classes through the alphabet. The motor classes signify the power of the motor with A being the least powerful.

While some launches go smoothly and some end with broken rockets that are never seen again, the rocketeers keep coming back, time and time again.

Despite the various reasons for being there, the participants all share one thing: a sense of community in what they are doing. Whether a longtime member or someone taking advantage of a free first launch, every person is friendly and happy to be there.

I’d love to hear what anyone thinks, especially about the writing. Its the first thing I’ve ever written for a newspaper that wasn’t meant to be opinion.

Catching Up

Well I’m now almost two weeks behind if not more. I have some various work from Greeley to post, so I’ll start with that.

These next few photos are from the Northeast Weld County Fair in the little town of New Raymer Colorado. I covered it last year for the Tribune and got to go back again a two Saturdays ago. I was amazed at how many of the same people there were there.

Next are a few photos from what turned out to be one of my better baseball games of the year. Kinda a shame to because the game wasn’t anything huge. Like I had already said to a few people I have a really hard time with baseball. Takes so much patience and focus at the same time.

And last is a photo from the Sam Brownlee Memorial Ride. Sam Brownlee was a Sheriff’s Deputy for Weld County who was killed at the end of a high speed chase last November. You can find more about it here.

I walked in not having the slightest clue what it was or who Sam Brownlee was. I really wish in hindsight that I would have looked it up first. So instead I came back to the office for an hour midway through the event and read about it.

Out of dumb luck my favorite photo of the day included Heather Brownlee on a motorcycle, which really connected the story of the ride and the photo together I think.

More to come soon. Please feel free to comment.
